Feminist Public Sculpture is a public sculpture and related research and engagement project championing the achievements and recognition of women in the city of Leeds. Conceived by Rachel Reeves (MP Leeds west), and project-managed by Leeds arts University in collaboration with Leeds City Council, this aim is a more balanced gender representation of public sculpture in Leeds.
This exhibition presents the contextual work of two contemporary British artists and that have successfully through their practice to publicly recognise women via their own media: Sharon Thomas (Mary Barbour) and Pippa Hale (Emmeline Pankhurst); alongside a showcase of maquettes by four shortlisted artists: Briony Marshall, Pippa Hale, Wendy Briggs and Zsofia Jakab, competing for the commission of a public monument celebrating women in Leeds city centre.
